Richard,

My last comment on this thread on this subject (regardless of the provocation).

the problem appears to have been a symptom of a larger problem, i.e., lack of a means of support for the children involved. By dealing with the symptom rather than the cause, things were made much worse for those children.

Precisely the point I attempted to make though not quite so articulately.

Our government's policies need to be more carefully thought through.

Exactly. The iterative consequences of an individual's, company's or government's actions should be understood before blindly charging ahead.

In the instance of child labour in undeveloped parts of the world, a more desirable alternative must first be developed to what any rational person from the developed world would regard as intolerable conditions for the children involved.

As much as we in North America may abhor it, their current situation may well be the best of a very bad set of choices.

At no time have I said that that makes it right or acceptable or any other euphemism for Ok. I have said that Government does cause untold harm through the best of intentions and described this as the Law of Unintended Consequences.

My apologies to the thread for having diverted the discussion away from mythical companies that will never exist.

Ian.
