I think not. And his has nothing to do with Scientific inquiry.

Imagine if you were a Catholic priest who taught your parish some special teachings that were at conflict with official Catholic dogma. Would you actually expect the church to be happy with this?

Actually, this sort of thing has been going on for centuries in all kinds of churches. A splinter group claims some special extra divine inspiration in addition to the officially recognized holy book. The parent church group kicks them out.

Now-a-days, this is not religious persecution but freedom of religion.
