D3D was a way for MS to sell more Windows I guess but 3dfx sells hardware so the principles are different. I don't think releasing Glide will generate more sales of Voodoo chips.

It's not necessarily about Voodoo chip sales, is it? It's about $$$. If 3dfx develops Glide to be a leading API and licenses it to other chip vendors, they get money. Since it's their API one might argue that they can develop the best chip for it (though Sun's Sun example proves this isn't always the case) and hence Voodoo sales will increase. The bottom line here is that if 3dfx successfully brings Glide to the forefront, they are going to see tangible benefits in the form of licensing revenues, increased chip sales, or both. But presently Glide is limited in its attractiveness to both chip vendors and end-users. I think 3dfx could change that if they wanted to, and I wish they would. I think developers are tired of waiting for DirectX to add new features and I as an end user am tired of waiting for DirectX to see those new features!

Also, my apologies for the "Apple bought Motorola thing", I misinformed myself. :)
