Companies Offer Flexible E-Biz Security
(06/14/99, 5:49 p.m. ET)

By Rutrell Yasin, InternetWeek

What does it take to build a truly secure online business?
Many enterprise managers will answer that it takes a flexible
infrastructure that can be extended to meet changing business
needs.

On Monday, two security vendors moved to give companies the
necessary building blocks to speed up deployment of secure
e-businesses.

GTE CyberTrust, a supplier of PKI technology, launched a set
of products and services to assist IT managers in implementing
secure extranets. The CyberTrust Secure Extranet includes a
certification authority Web server, directory, database,
firewall, access control, and managed services.

Meanwhile, Securant Technologies unveiled an updated
version of its access management software that lets IT staff
centrally manage security services for Web and network-based
applications. ClearTrust SecureControl 3.5 provides
rules-based access control, policy assessment, and PKI
integration in a single console.

CyberTrust's digital certificate and Web hosting services
enable Ruesch International to focus on its core business of
providing international payment solutions for companies.

The financial services company conducts high volumes of
business-to-business transactions over its RueschLINK
extranet, said Ronald Szoc, vice president for technology at
Ruesch.

"If a food importer, for example, imports [products] from
Belgium and needs to pay the supplier in francs or the
eurodollar, the company would go through us [to make
payments]," Szoc said.

Companies can make arrangements for future payments or
execute a payment for delivering next day, he added.

By using CyberTrust's Web-Advantage hosting service, Ruesch
can supply clients with digital certificates that enable them to
securely access Ruesch's database for online transactions, Szoc
said.

Ruesch opted for GTE CyberTrust because of its breadth of
services. Besides the certificate and Web hosting services,
Ruesch also uses GTE's managed VPN and firewall services.

A central component of CyberTrust's approach is the Secure
Extranet Method, which details the process for deploying
extranets, said Joyce Fai, CyberTrust's product line manager.
The method focuses on needs assessments and vulnerability
testing, design, security policies, and application integration,
she said.

Pricing for Secure Extranet varies depending on customer
implementation.

Securant Technologies is providing a unified security
infrastructure for both Web and enterprise applications.
SecureControl, the first product in the ClearTrust suite, lets IT
managers centrally control user access to extranets, intranets,
and Internet-based applications, said Eric Olden, Securant's
chief technology officer. The product uses Smart Rules
technology to automate the administration of security policy
across enterprises.

Improved authentication rules give administrators more
control over which application resources users can access. IT
managers are now able to specify permission rights at the
server, directory, application, and Web page levels. The
software also supports multiple authentication methods,
including passwords, digital certificates, and tokens all within
the same session.

In addition, version 3.5 provides certificate revocation list
checking and integration with Entrust Direct PKI technology.
The software runs on Unix and Windows NT. Pricing starts at
$20 per user
