JDN,
I'm pretty sure that generally speaking, cars were cheaper for the average person than they are know, but I do not have the specific facts on hand.
One thing is for sure, they were simpler to repair, especially as far as pollution controls and electronics go! I used to do many of the repairs myself, such as replacing water pumps, master brake cylinders, carbs, heater motors, etc, etc. Now I look under the hood and just say forget it. I will still use the computer readout device to make sure that the mechanic is'nt trying to rip me off, because full trust when it comes to repairs can oftentimes be a dangerous thing! Yogi
