Why would a developer write a new game and deliberately limit themselves to one brand of video card, it would not make any sense.

You mean like Playstation or Nintendo? I understand where you are coming from though. On the PC platform 3 standards are too many and the proprietary ones will probably be dropped (ie. Glide). If 3dfx also had a set-top, Mac PC, or console useable through Glide that would be a reason in itself to develop for Glide. The developer would get two platforms for one interface. If, however, 3dfx decides not to do any of these things I'd rather see the R&D spent on things that will be used by developers going forward (like OpenGL).
