Vitesse Introduces Industry's First Wide LVD Ultra-3 Compliant SCSI and IPMI Enclosure Management Controller; Simultaneously Supports Target and Initiator Operation CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 1999--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:VTSS) today introduced the VSC205, the industry's first fully compliant wide LVD SCSI Enclosure Management Controller, and the latest generation of SCSI enclosure management. The VSC205 provides support for SCSI Enclosure Services (SES), SCSI Accessed Fault Tolerant Enclosure (SAF-TE), and Intelligent Platform Management Initiative (IPMI) that allows storage subsystem diagnostics. The VSC205 is Vitesse's latest addition to its expanding line of enclosure and platform management products, developed by its Serano Systems business unit. The VSC205 is used in SCSI JBODs, RAID Subsystems, and servers with integrated storage for monitoring system operation. The VSC205 provides flexibility by supporting both target or initiator modes of operation over an 8 or 16-bit SCSI bus. The VSC205 highly integrated enclosure management device provides a cost-effective solution for Ultra-2 or Ultra-3 SCSI storage systems. The VSC205 optimizes SCSI bus connect and transfer time with its high performance RISC engine, integrated wide SCSI controller, and universal LVD transceivers. In addition, the SCSI controller fully supports wide SCSI arbitration, and selection and disconnect and reselect handshaking. For added flexibility and testability, both target and initiator modes are supported, simultaneously allowing the device to perform typical SAF-TE and SES functions, while retaining the capability to act as an initiator and perform diagnostic operations within the system. The VSC205 integrates three master/slave mode two-wire serial interfaces, a general purpose UART, a 32-bit timer, general purpose I/O, an external memory interface, and a Serial-ICE interface for firmware debugging and development. This higher level of integration allows for a reduced board space and reduces overall system costs. "The VSC205 demonstrates Vitesse's commitment to deliver enclosure and platform management controllers with unsurpassed flexibility and performance," said Michael Millhollan, vice president of Vitesse's datacom division. "The VSC205 SDK is consistent with the other controllers offered by Vitesse, allowing high levels of leveragability of firmware between platforms. This leverage reduces the overall R&D costs and accelerates time to market, and insures SES interoperability between platforms, whether those systems are fiber channel or SCSI," concluded Millhollan. As with Vitesse's other industry leading enclosure management controllers, a complete Software Development Kit (SDK) and evaluation platform are available for the VSC205, simplifying the task of design engineers. The modular SDK architecture scales from low-cost SAF-TE to high availability fiber channel SES systems. A companion device to the VSC205, the SSC050 two-wire backplane controller integrates most of the enclosure management related digital logic found in storage subsystems. The device includes 40 bi-directional, highly programmable, general purpose I/O pins. All I/O pins can drive LEDs with a programmable flash rate. Four of the I/O pins can optionally monitor fan speed. Eight pairs of I/O pins can also provide additional control of FC-AL port bypass circuits, such as the VSC7128.
