I think I posted a week or so ago regarding the poor ramp of Intels 0.18 micron process.

I suspect that Intel's 0.18 micron process is having speed problems.
The 600Mhz for coppermine is again pretty poor performance- when the chip finally shows up in a few months.

It will be interesting to see at what speeds Coppermine comes out.

If it's 550/600 then we know they are in trouble-they can only match AMD's 0.25 micron process.
If it's 600/667 then at least they really have an OK process.

My thesis on their 0.18 is that the transistors are indeed 30-50% faster but they have agressively scaled their metal pitch rules-to get competitive die sizes. This results in much higher wire resistance and longer routing delays offsetting the improved transistors.

AMD has always had agressive metal pitch so they should see a bigger improvement in the migration to 0.18 micron and particularly when the cu parts show up.

Boy, this is fresh. Intel announces volume production on the new 0.18 micron process (not just an announcement with product to follow two months later), and already the AMD supporters are trying to spread the FUD. Geez, one Dirk Meyer presentation, and already they're getting drunk with anti-Intel excitement!

By the way, in case you haven't realized, the announcement today is one of the reasons why you'll NEVER see AMD-style production problems cropping up at Intel. Can you guarantee that AMD won't run into any major troubles with their transition to 0.18 microns?

That's right, Cringe.

But in 6 months, expect Intel to LOWER the voltage as they make process improvements.

Intel's 0.18 micron 400 MHz Pentium II, at 9.8 watts MAXIMUM is 40% BELOW th epower dissipation of AMD's Kmart 63 (0.25 micron) running at only 380 MHz.


But AMD's Kmart 63 power isn't an issue - since hardly anybody uses them !
