Review of Operations

- Minerals Division

The Company is the world's largest producer of tantalum, accounting for approximately 50 per cent of primary tantalum concentrates produced on a global basis. Tantalum is used in the electronics and metal cutting industries, the development of super alloys and the manufacture of defence electronic systems and jet aero engines.

The Company is a major participant in the global lithium minerals industry. Lithium minerals are used in the glass and ceramics industries for the production of pyroceramics, TV tubes, computer monitors and many types of container glass.

The Company also produces and markets tin and kaolin and produces silica sand in joint venture with Itochu Corporation and Tochu Co. Ltd.

Tantalum

Total tantalum production for the quarter from the Greenbushes and Wodgina Mines was 226,515 lbs. with sales of 217,523 lbs.

Greenbushes Mine, Western Australia (100%)

Tantalum production for the March quarter totalled 181,980 lbs. Sales under contract for the quarter of various tantalum products totalled 178,669 lbs. Tin production totalled 168 tonnes and 154 tonnes were sold for the quarter.

Production was in line with budget.

Wodgina Tantalum Mine, Western Australia (100%)

Tantalum production from the Wodgina Mine for the quarter was 44,535 lbs. Sales for the quarter totalled 38,854 lbs.

Construction of expanded processing facilities is well advanced. Commissioning will occur in July 1999 which will increase production levels from 180,000 lbs. to 300,000 lbs. per year.

New reserves and resources figures for both mines are due to be completed in the June quarter.

Bynoe Tantalum Project, Northern Territory

The Company's Bynoe Project is currently in production under a tribute agreement. Under the agreement, annual production of approximately 30,000 lbs. of tantalum from the project is being purchased and further processed at the Company's Greenbushes Mine.

Lithium Minerals

Sales and production of lithium minerals (spodumene) were 14,700 tonnes and 15,349 tonnes respectively for the quarter.
