Softbank in final stages of Japanese Nasdaq talks
TOKYO, June 15 (Reuters) - Japanese Internet giant Softbank Corp said on Tuesday that it and the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) of the United States are at final stages of talks to set up a Japanese version of the Nasdaq stock market MESSAGE TERMINATED

Softbank said in a statement that it and the NASD were finalising points in a contract for establishing Nasdaq Japan, and would not comment on further details.

Industry sources said on Monday that the Nasdaq, the second-largest U.S. stock market, was likely to announce the launch of a sister system of electronic trading in Japan.

Nasdaq said it would make a major announcement at a news briefing at 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily reported on Monday that the Japanese Nasdaq would trade venture company stocks and some U.S. firms listed on Nasdaq.

The Nasdaq news briefing in New York will be attended by Patrick Campbell, Nasdaq's chief operating officer, while NASD Chairman Frank Zarb will participate via videoconference.

The Nihon Keizai report said Zarb was arriving in Tokyo for discussions with Japan's Ministry of Finance (MOF).

Nasdaq already has a European sibling, Easdaq, a Brussels-based system that trades stocks from across Europe.
