"Creative Labs says it has developed a driver that smashes the texture-size limitation of Voodoo2 and Banshee cards under GL games.

The driver essentially lets Voodoo2 and Banshee owners display games that use texture sizes of up to 2048x2048 allowing for crisper gaming. Creative Labs officials said the process splits the textures into smaller pieces that the card can display. Voodoo2 and Banshee boards have limited texture sizes of 256x256 in hardware.

In games such as Quake III Arena, the driver would split the maximum 512x512 textures into four pieces before spitting them out to the screen, said Jim Carlton, a senior brand manager of graphics and video at Creative. Carlton declined to speak about specifics of the driver which is due to be released Monday."

They also posted this update after they Max PC staff had demoed the new drivers:

"This is an update to the story we ran earlier today on Creative's new miniGL driver which adds support for large textures to Voodoo2 and Banshee video cards.

We took Creative's new miniGL driver for a spin and we are very impressed with the sharp high-res textures, despite the slight frame rate hit realized when using this triple-pass process. There are also some graphical glitches to be wary of, especially in the texture seams and procedural textures (i.e. marks of the walls), but it's pretty damn impressive nonetheless. "

As always, quality control suffers when these 3rd party bolt-ons are used.
