congrats to all the long-termers. considering
the value of its investments alone, ALSC is
terribly undervalued. also considering the
upturn in semis, this stock should continue
to move as long as the market doesnt completely
fall apart. i am looking for a tech rally soon
which should help the semis as well. the
street.com article was very enlightening. wish
i had bought a few months ago.

STOCKWATCH: UMC sharply higher on merger plan

TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - United Microelectronics Corp shares are sharply higher
after yesterday's announcement of plans to merge four other wafer foundry units
-- USC, UICC, USIC and UTEK -- by the end of the year, dealers said.
At 9:25 am, UMC was up 4.00 twd at 67.50 on volume of 26.20 mln shares, CMC
added 6.50 to 109.00 on 14.74 mln shares, and TSMC rose 7.50 to 118.00, having
traded in 116.50-118.00, on 71.49 mln shares. They were all limit-up.
UTEK was limit-down 2.80 twd at 37.70 on 8.04 mln shares.
The electronics sector was up 3.48 pct.
The weighted index was up 96.77 points at 8,070.35, off a high of 8,109. 28,
on turnover of 38.13 bln twd.
The Taiwan dollar was at 32.360 against the U.S. dollar, from yesterday's
close of 32.427.
Dealers said expectations of increasing competiveness and earnings per
share after the merger triggered a buying spree in UMC, which will be the
surviving entity following the merger.
However, UMC unit UTEK encountered a steep sell-off as UTEK will be
delisted after the merger, they said.
The broad electronics sector outperformed the market on the UMC lead and as
TSMC and CMC went ex-dividend today, they added.
TSMC shares closed at 138.00 twd yesterday, which was diluted to 110.50
amid a stock dividend of 2.30 twd.
CMC shares closed yesterday at 143.50, which was diluted to 102.50 amid a
stock dividend of 4.00 twd.

ALSC was at $15 less than 2 yrs. ago in a much weaker scenario, so anything is possible, especially with semi sales on the rise, SRAM very strong etc.
