marshall-- thanks for the tip on creating links. while i understood you were talking about human nature (sort of a those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it), in one sense those arguments are susceptible to the logical error of the false analogy. historical precedents are certainly useful, but they have their limits (the military being prepared to fight the last war, not the next one)(e.g., maginot line v. blitzkrieg). so in trying to determine which precedents are applicable, and how they may apply, it is useful to consider not only the similarites of the precedent-- as you have pointed out-- but also the differences. i'm not sure that it's a point in controversy at all that many highly valued internet companies will fall, never to rise again-- but i think cmgi is not one of them. otoh, maybe i did totally miss your point, in which case i'm sorry.
