If that is the case, then why maintain the charade.

And if "might make right", the USSR may be in a mess, but they have a whole pile of nukes facing us too. So that logic is dubious at best.
While having the capacity to protect one's self is important, it certainly does not make an economy - if it did, the USSR would be booming too.

So ..... confidence is where it's at - and presently that's in the US .... but not necessarily forever. That's an economy built upon borrowed paper at all levels ... personal, corporate and government .... not a stable underpinning for a healthy economy and rising bonds are starting to show that is the case.
