I cannot help, I would like to help him. Sometimes he has brilliant ideas, but then all of a sudden it is all flawed again by some wrong or overly estimated assumption. The pity about him is he feels hurt for a long time when only you want to give him a helping hand to see the world clearer. Maybe I am simply wrong about him. As to pedigree, as far as I can see in Europe, this is not an issue anymore, but laughing stuff. We think that somebody who tries to hold on to such things given to him when he was born, like a young aristocrat or the son/daughter of a wealthy man, or to a strong person of an older generation is very likely to be very weak and flawed in character as well. Such person is bound to fail in his/her life. Maybe this would be a Texas view of the world in the US ? I don't claim though to know all in Europe, like my special friends does sometimes. But to give you a well documented example, that is widely seen as typical in my surrounding, take Aitken (I think Jonathan is his first name). His steep political career plummeted back in mid 1980s when he told Margaret Thatcher's daughter he was NOT going to marry her. And directly after the ballot in which he won his parliamentary seat! Anyway, the true extent of his opportunism came to the light later, marking the end of his career recently. I think the whole of your first paragraph indicates to me that the strongest impact on language comes from educated middle class people (or at least, in your usage of it). Your second paragraph showed me I did understand "urban legends" right up to now, but still have to learn what "folklore" means. The word seems to have a different meaning in German. Also my supposition there be also rural legends seems to be wrong. I think we sometimes meet them in Germany's regional characters. I saw your latest posting while there is a server error that forbade me to answer. Question: >partisanship "stops at the water's edge"<. Is "partisanship" the belonging or personal support for one particular political party inside US? And is "the water's edge" the sea between US and countries other than Canada and Mexico? Best regards to you Neo, MNI
