Bottom line, I have little confidence in governments of all stripes (my own included) to navigate the economy properly - at some point I believe the whole works has the potential to cave it.

Always a possibility... just like they did in 1929 under the very gold standard so many of you advocate. They had that very same "hard money" attitude, ignoring the fact that the best storehouse of value is economic growth and being invested in the proper sectors.

I do not want to see that happen - but I do want a mechanism to preserve wealth

You have that already. There are any number of plays you can make in the commodities sector that would store your paper wealth quite nicely, if not make you a profit, during times of distress.

- and the world needs one that is more universal than the US dollar - or any particular dollar for that matter.

That's what I don't get. How is gold universal? It's value is strictly a matter of perception with no set standard.

And as I said before, if the world ever gets to the point where you have to have gold in order to purchase something, I would rather invest in food and commodities that are economic necessities. People will sell their gold to me in order to obtain those commodities.

Just like those merchants who made a fortune during the California gold rush selling booze, food, and equipment to the gold miners.

Regards,

Ron
