Nicholas,

The evasive two to five year horizon. I don't think that the capacity issue will ever resolve itself in such a manner. Like today's un-interactive TV seems to have done, using what are now conventional program cable TV delivery schemes. That's a good case in point. Just as the number of channels seems to have stabilized, and we don't really see the need for Mallone's 500 channels, along comes cable modem, interactive services and voice, to push the envelope, while each has the effect of limiting the others' abilities to breathe.

If we should ever reach such a plateau of bandwidth sufficiency, through optical delivery schemes and/or yet unheard of wireless alternatives where bandwidth would seem to be sufficient to satisfy horizon issues, another form of bottleneck will surely arise and take over for some spell.

It's the nature of the beast. Bit squeezing and photon pinching providers will always see to it, for this is how they make a living. By creating the illusion of scarcity, while preserving the value of the payload.

I've been hearing 2 to 5 years for 32 years now (or was it 35? years?).

Regards, Frank Coluccio
