( BW)(NY-WINSTAR-COMMUNICATIONS)(WCII) America's Network Magazine Inducts WinStar CEO Into Hall of Fame

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1999--America's Network has selected William J. Rouhana, Jr., President and CEO, WinStar Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: WCII) to be inducted into the magazine's Hall of Fame.
Under Rouhana's leadership, WinStar has become one of the telecommunications industry's fastest-rising service providers.
The editors of America's Network choose Hall of Fame inductees annually. This year they were influenced not only by Rouhana's success at delivering less expensive and quicker-to-deploy telecommunications services, but by the results of America's Network 1999 Readers' Choice Awards in which readers named Rouhana the most forward-thinking carrier executive, and WinStar the best competitive carrier.
"America's Network is proud to recognize Bill Rouhana for his vision and leadership," said Mary Slepicka, Group Editor. "With licenses in the top 60 U.S. markets and the ability to deliver fiber optic quality service over fixed wireless connections, he has given WinStar a unique position in today's local, long distance and high-speed data markets."
Rouhana joins a distinguished group of Hall of Fame honorees. This year, the magazine also inducted Michael Armstrong, CEO of AT&T. Some of those previously inducted include Bill McGowan (1984) Chairman and CEO of MCI; William T. Esrey (1989) Chairman and CEO of US Sprint and president and CEO of United Telecom; James L. 'Rocky' Johnson (1991) Chairman and CEO of GTE; and Irwin Jacobs (1997) Chairman of QUALCOMM. (For more information, see the June 1 issue of America's Network.)
"It is an honor to be recognized by America's Network," said William J. Rouhana, Jr. "We're very proud of our rapid growth and accomplishments at WinStar, and believe that our efforts to bring competition to businesses across the country will dramatically improve the way we work and live."
Published by Advanstar Communications, America's Network is a leading telecommunications business magazine that focuses on the public network infrastructure and the technologies that drive it. Technical and corporate managers who create and provision services at both incumbent and competitive carriers read the magazine, which is published 18 times a year.
WinStar Communications, Inc. is a pioneer in providing business customers with broadband communications services, including local and long distance phone service, as well as high-speed Internet access, data and information services. WinStar provides these Wireless Fiber(SM) services in more than 30 U.S. markets over its own local broadband networks, using its licenses in the 28 and 38 GHz spectrum, which are connected to the company's nationwide fiber-optic network. In addition, the company offers Wireless Fiber services in two markets outside of the U.S. In the past year, WinStar has become one of the largest Internet companies in the U.S. Recently, the company announced a destination Web site for businesses, Office.com(SM), a service from WinStar.

Paul, Steve or anyone,
I found an interesting company in the Red Herring 100 top private companies. Formus Communications is building out LMDS in areas of the world that have underdeveloped communications infrastructure. They currently are building in Poland, Columbia, Argentina and Ecuador. They also own spectrum in Hungary, Germany and New Zealand. The article also stated they sold WNP Communications to Nextlink Communications. Interesting they chose to build first in international markets rather than in the United States.Article is in Red Herring June 1999, page 84.
Warm Regards,
Gary
