Mary & GV: Having spent time with both Bob Stansky and Jeff Vinik (though I will admit to having spent more with Bob), I would not use either one as a example of anything bad. I have met most of the institutional investors in Intel and those two stand out as a couple of the best. Vink, in particular, has a guy working for him (that went with him from Fidelity) named Marc Kaufman who is one of the quickest, smartest guys I've met. When I met him he was the semiconductor analyst at Fidelity supporting all the portfolio managers there.

One of my best memories from my IR days was sitting in a room full of Fidelity managers a few days after Intel announced there would be no Q4'96 price move. I kept returning to this point in our conversation hoping somebody would absorb how important the implications of that decision might be to their level of enthusiasm regarding INTC. Kaufman understood the implications immediately and was so excited that you almost had to hold him down to keep him from climbing across the table and screaming "BUY" at the portfolio managers.

They did buy.

Back to your point. Both Marc and Bob rarely exhibited what I would call hubris in my presence. Can't speak for Jeff, like I said, I didn't know him that well.

regards,
jh

p.s. Now if you want to talk about hubris - I have a separate list of people on Wall Street who could qualify. In general, I liked most of the people I dealt with on the street.
