HCL Technologies plans expansion

New Delhi

HCL technologies is planning a major expansion to target markets in Europe, South America and Asia. The group's hardware arm has also decided to enhance its focus on facilities management.

HCL Technologies has allocated a budget of $200million for its global expansion plans, said RP Singh, Director (International Marketing), HCL Technologies.

"To support our expansion moves, we have kept acquisitions and mergers as one of the major options. Primarily because it is easier to acquire a company and then bring it under HCL's umbrella than going all the way out for an organic growth where we have to set up a new company, hire professionals and then start working. I believe it is more time consuming," he said.

The company had earlier chalked a plan to focus on Asian markets, but has diluted its interest in this region. "We would like to go slow on Asia," Singh said.

The expansion in the Western markets plan will be initiated after the company goes public in the international market, which it has been planning for some time.

"The whole process will be completed by fiscal 2000. We are looking at various options of going public and we are expecting something within six months' time. Once that happens, the whole process of expansion will not take much time," Singh said.

Meanwhile, the HCL group's hardware arm, HCL Infosystems (HCL Insys), has decided to focus on facilities management as a prime market for the 1999-2000 fiscal. The company plans to invest about Rs 3- 4 crore on training, and management of employees for the whole project.

HCL Insys will help corporate clients outsource all hardware services, including running computer systems and management of call centers, helpdesk services, etc. The company is already working on adding more outlets, both through its dealers and its own shops to cater to the market.

"We want to be a total service provider where the companies can actually rely upon us for their systems. There would be no need for the company to hire systems professionals. They can have a yearly contract with us to begin with and we will look after their systems," said Sharad Talwar, General Manager (Marketing), HCL Insys.
