According to Gulf Power, full-scale rollout of the Scientific-Atlanta system could reach as many as 40,000 homes within Gulf Power's service area over the next five years. Scientific-Atlanta and Gulf Power announced their agreement to deploy the MainGate system technology as part of a comprehensive advanced energy management program in the fall of 1996. The contract, which extends to 2004, allows Gulf Power to better manage energy sales during critical peak periods as well as offer other customer-oriented services. Gulf Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company, serves approximately 350,000 retail customers in an eight-county region of Northwest Florida. The MainGate system at Gulf Power links customers via a VHF paging interface, with a telephone line response. The Gateway units are the customer-site hardware that provides the communication link between the utility and the customer. The system, which also includes a proprietary Honeywell Superstat, lets customers program major appliances, such as HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, water heaters and pool pumps, to respond to different pricing tiers. Additional services that Gulf Power offers include outage detection and whole house surge suppression. In the future, these services could expand to include home security and home automation. The two-way interactive system also allows Gulf Power to remotely read meters and detect meter tampering. Steve Higginbottom, Gulf Power spokesperson said, "Gulf Power has taken the lead in offering consumers new technology to enhance their comfort and control energy consumption. The deployment of the MainGate system will help consumers add value to their energy purchases by providing an opportunity to control their household energy usage and generate greater savings." Theodore R. Wieber, corporate vice president and president of Scientific-Atlanta's Satellite Networks business unit, said, "Delivering the first MainGate units is an important milestone in the deployment of Gulf Power's GoodCents Select program. We have worked very closely with Gulf Power to develop rigorous requirements for the product through extensive ‘beta' testing to ensure the MainGate system meets and exceeds customer expectations." Scientific-Atlanta's MainGate system is built around an open architecture and supports a variety of communications protocols, including Lonworks®, CEBus® and hardwire. The Gateway unit resides at the customer site and facilitates communication between the utility and end-use devices that can include electric meters, thermostats, appliances and, in the future, televisions and personal computers.
