It would make a large difference if the number of authorized shares is reduced accordingly. Given your example of a 1:5 split reducing the outstanding shares from 100 mill to 20 mill, there would now be an extra 80 million shares that the company could issue. It is my belief that the number of authorized shares would also be reduced. As you mention, I don't think it is a big deal. Many weak hands dropping out now will make the next run more sustainable.
