Indeed, I had developed economies in mind - so there is a success bias. However, that precisely is the point. The market index doesn't exist in a vacuum, it reflects the economy behind it. If the economy does well, so does the index. So, personally I focus my attention on the economy and not on the index.

Now, what makes the economy tick is a different issue altogether. One thing is clear IMO, whatever it is, it is rarely the level of the market index on average over the long term.
