10:57 DJS Gates Says Tech-Industry Competition Is Thriving, Driving Economy

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Microsoft Corp. Chairman and CEO Bill Gates
told a congressional committee Tuesday that antitrust laws as currently
written are "fine" and that competition is thriving in the technology industry
without government interference.
Gates appeared before Congress' Joint Economic Committee as the
government's sweeping antitrust case against the software giant continues on
Pennsylvania Avenue. The trial, which resumed two weeks ago after a
three-month recess, is expected to continue through this month as both sides
present rebuttal witnesses.
Microsoft (MSFT) is trying to disprove the government's argument that
it manipulated the price of Windows in an effort to force personal-computer
makers to promote Microsoft software over rival products. The Justice
Department and 19 states charge Microsoft with leveraging its monopoly in
operating-system software to extend control into new markets, including
Internet software. Microsoft has denied the charges and has called its actions
good for consumers.
On Capitol Hill Tuesday, Gates, responding to questions from Sen.
Charles Robb (D., Va.) about the need for government intervention in the
industry, said the basic concept of "letting the marketplace work has been
vindicated."

"We have no reason to think anything will change before the end of the year," he said. "Dell should continue to be the fastest growing company in the computer industry."
