Well, I'm sorry Steve, it's a great sentiment, but I want you to listen carefully:

We will never get a flat tax rate.

Sorry.

See, the problem is that the people who actually benefit the most from our current "progressive" tax structure are those who can afford the best accountants. The people who stand to lose the most with a flat tax rate are those same people -- the people who have already bought and paid for the government.

With the subtle urging of the rich, the bleeding hearts are going to (as they already do whenever the subject comes up) ignore the real statistics that show that for most of the wealthiest people in this country, a 17% tax rate is considerably higher than what they're actually paying right now. They'll just start screaming about "another Republican tax cut for the rich" until the idea dies. And the middle class will continue to pay the lion's share of everything. Including corporate welfare, but that's another subject.

I agree that our nation would best be served by a flat tax. I just don't think there's a chance that we'll actually get one.

Besides, the IRS is not about to give up its power. Getting the IRS to simplify the tax code would probably be about like getting Microsoft to simplify Windows.

George Bush. sigh. I find him similar to Regan, just
a lot more selfish. I do believe that he will be able
to beat the Regan record for number of vacation days per
year taken--that's the best thing about his presidency.
Actually, let's face it, his chief of staff will be the de
facto President,or, perhaps Cheney will become the puppet master, should be interesting
His leadership style is "first to the 19th, gets free drinks". Cheap, Stupid and Lazy, he's just what the world
needs.
His handlers need to give him a couple of complete sentences
to parade out in the next debate--that should swing the tide
of the undecideds to his corner.
