IBM is developing a network ship, code named Rainer, which will increase network throughput by at least 30% in devices it is
built into - will support layer 2,3,4, and 5 switching and routing and will permit wire speed links to Ethernet, ATM and SONET
networks - Will allow users more easily build networks capable of quaranteeing QoS - Will be an off the shelf network
processor - expected to be part of high end IP switches from major network vendors within a year - will handle 40 fast
ethernet or four gigabit ethernet ports and act as a bridge between ethernet and packet over SONET networks.
