MB,

wonder if this is good or bad? Is DRAM business so strong or is the competition to MU ramping up?

DRAM Production Increases in US to Meet Demand

06/14(¿ù) 19:36

The production of dynamic random access memory chips in the United States is increasing rapidly to cope with strong demand in the local market, industry sources said.

They said the production volume in the U.S. has increased to the point where the local manufacture of 64 megabit DRAMs exceeds the volume of chips exported from Korea.

According to the source, Samsung Electronics currently produces 8 million 64M units per month at its plant in Austin, Texas, which is about the same processing volume as its plant in Kihung, Kyonggi-do.

One Samsung official said, ''Half of the demand in the United States has been met by the Austin production plant since the beginning of this year with the rest being shipped from home.''

Similarly, Hyundai Electronics Industries has been operating its fabrication facility in Eugene, Oregon at full capacity since last May, processing an average of 30,000 8-inch wafers per month.

''The full-fledged production at the Eugene plant means that 70 percent of the demand in the United States is being met locally,'' said one HEI official.

He went on to say that HEI has been selling an average of 80 million 64M units in the United States annually of which 54 million is being manufactured in Eugene.

''The advantage of producing in the United States is that there is no threat of anti-dumping investigations and this is a load off our minds,'' the HEI official explained.

Owing to the fact that the two facilities both enjoy high yields, mainly due to competitive processing expertise, production is expected to be in full swing for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, HEI was still reevaluating its plan to complete a fabrication plant in Scotland, a project which came to a halt after the financial crisis at the end of 1997
