Detroit Edison today began producing electricity for its customers at its Conners Creek Power Plant following conversion of the plant from coal fuel to natural gas. The Conners Creek facility is the latest addition to the Detroit Edison generating system under the utility's Summer Peak Electric Supply Plan. When the startup process is complete at the end of the month, the plant will be available to add up to 200 megawatts (MW) to the Detroit Edison electric system, enough electric capacity to supply about 150,000 households. In April 1998, the company announced plans to return Conners Creek to service with its original coal-fired capability to help meet the ever- increasing summer customer demand. The plant operated minimally during the start-up process and was available only to maintain electrical system security due to concerns expressed by local citizens and environmental regulators. As a result, in order to meet customer demand, Detroit Edison purchased electrical capacity from sources outside Michigan amid a volatile marketplace and limited capacity on existing transmission lines into the state. ''The availability of the Conners Creek plant, with its new natural gas- fired capability, provides additional electric generating capacity within Michigan to help us meet customers' increasing peak demands for electricity,'' said William Roller, vice president, Power Generation. ''Detroit Edison is focused on maintaining a secure source of energy resources internal to Michigan. Operating the Conners Creek Power Plant means our company and customers will not have to rely as heavily on resources external to the state that may not be available when needed.'' Detroit Edison continues to monitor power use as the summer heats up and air conditioning use increases. Early summer weather prompted the utility's customers to demand a record 11,027 MW of electric capacity on June 10, 1999, surpassing the previous record of 10,860 MW set on June 7. The previous record of 10,704 MW was set on June 25, 1998. SOURCE: Detroit Edison
