darrell...not my views, only reality..let's dispel some rumors

if you honestly believe that msd and "direct from dell" was a visionary statement, created solely by the "charisma" of "mikey", then you are extremely short on real world business acumen.

let's learn a bit about the "d" man you refer to..1928 grad of yale
(and if you truly understood the dell model..his name would be on your lips)

deming was a true "world maker", many, many years prior to "mikey" being able to say "charisma" "mikey" will never attain the global impact of dr. deming, let's be real!

let's read the 1980's "theory z" by ouichi...again preceding "mikey" by a bit.

"mikey" not at all an innovator...more an opportunist and modifier of what preceded him by fifty years. "mikey" very good at what he does, the business a tremendous model...but merely a model of some one elses creation.

you in your naivete, as most westerners have no true knowledge of what japan has achieved, if there is any underestimates it is yours in a conclusion of the jpns business model.

so my astute friend if the bto model was not based on japan...you think it came from "mikeys" head...????

i've been active in bto process with the jpns since the late seventies....a bit earlier then dell...so i am living proof along with mitsubishi, kawasaki, hitachi, mitsui, nkk, that such a model did exist..

i leave you with a thought from "mikey"..

objective: to enter new fields only when the ideas we have, together with our technical, manufacturing, and marketing skills, assure that we can make a needed and profitable contribution to the field...

silly me, my mistake..that was a quote from william hewlett in 1957...<g>

so as you seem to be intimate with the japanese nation, enlighten me, what is the "consumption mentality" of the japanese people...or are you only quoting some buzz words from an economist?
