Joe H....about tomorrow's consumer price report: I spent 18 years as a public information officer in the agency that releases all the key economic statistics that seem to be driving the stock market crazy right now. These include the producer price index, consumer price index, unemployment figures, employment cost index and some others. NO ONE outside of the Bureau of Labor Statistics knows in advance what those numbers are going to be. Those figures are closely guarded until 8:30 a.m. of the day on which they are released, and there at least USED to be an embargo on media reporting of the figures until 9 a.m. to give all media time to file their stories, altho I noticed that CNNfn was reporting such figures at 8:40 a.m. one morning. I couldnt' believe they were violating the embargo. There have been two recent instances in which a BLS employee posted these figures on the agency's website without knowing that he was doing so in such a way that they were accessible to the public. An astounded media reporter who found the figures early called the Bureau to report the first instance. Heads rolled as a result. These figures are considered very sensitive, due to their impact on everything from futures in the stock market to various types of contracts, and anyone outside of government who claims to know what the figures will show is speculating. Employees who are privy to the figures are barred from participating in the futures market. By the way, the recently reported mild uptick in the Producer Price Index kinda foreshadows only a mild, if any, increase in the Consumer Price Index, if you are a betting person.
