More People Used Internet in May, Web Study Shows

Princeton, New Jersey, June 15 (Bloomberg) -- More people
used the Internet in May than in April and spent more time on the
Web.
Internet measurement service Nielsen/NetRatings said
visitors to the top 10 Web sites, which include Yahoo! Inc.,
Lycos Inc. and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN, increased by 8.7 percent in
May. That follows a 4 percent decline in April from March.
Nielsen collects data from about 15,000 panelists as they surf
the Web.
The average Internet surfer spent 36 minutes and 13 seconds
on the Web, compared to 29 minutes, 13 seconds in May, a 22
percent increase. America Online Inc.'s Web sites had the most
visitors, with 33.9 million people logging on. Ranking next were
Yahoo with 26 million, MSN with 22.1 million and Lycos with 19.3
million.
The number of visitors to the top Web sites is a good
indicator of overall Internet activity, since they represent
about 90 percent of total Internet activity, Nielsen said.
There were significant increases in audience size in several
categories, including a 16 percent increase in travel and a 14.6
percent increase in shopping, Nielsen said.
