Time for a new theory, then.

Bell Atlantic acquired NYNEX in 1997.

If a Baby Bell were bought by a third party, could the third party merge with another Baby Bell, or purchase another Baby Bell.

The FCC and other regulatory operations seem to be in a constant state of flux. I suspect that the above is possible, if not today, in the near future. Politically it will be much easier for Qwest to merge with or buy Bell South then for Bell South to buy them after they've bought US West.

Ahhhh......Bell Atlantic...NYNEX...???? Illegal not!

The real reason is that the government, in light of the recent mergers and acquisitions of the former Bell companies, independent telcoms and other entities, would find approval of further mergers to come dangerously close to a re-assemblage of the original AT&T which in theory would de-emphasize competition.

Incidentally, T's acquisition of TCI, Mediaone and its tentative deal with Time Warner, if implemented and executed efficiently and timely will do exactly that and consequently has the entire Telecom industry in a complete quandary.

This is precisely why we all stared a 65 million share trading day and a 25% loss straight in the face.

mfgrep, um Bell Atlantic merged with NYNEX not that long ago. I'm pretty sure there have been others.

SBC Communications (Southwestern Bell) recently purchased Pacific Bell.
It's not illegal. The question is whether the regulators believe it is in the public interest.
