Pace digital cable boxes are in production......................... Pace Sets the Pace With World's First Integrated DOCSIS-Compliant Box; Box Already Manufactured, Deployed, and in Use in Customers' Homes CHICAGO, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- NCTA -- Pace Micro Technology plc, Europe's largest manufacturer of digital set-top boxes, announced today that it is the first to market with DOCSIS-compliant set-top boxes. Pace has manufactured and deployed the world's first digital cable set-top box integrated with Cisco Systems, Inc.'s DOCSIS-compliant cable modem, and powered by Hitachi's Super H3 chip. Pace's box, known as the Di4100, has been operating on a "DOCSIS-live" network since May with Cable & Wireless Communications' customers in northwest England. This box will run NCI DTV Navigator software which will allow full high-speed Web browsing through the cable modem. The DOCSIS-compliant box is available today for cable operators anywhere in the world, which is particularly significant in the U.S. where DOCSIS-compliant boxes have not yet been deployed. "It can easily be configured for American TV Standards, i.e. NTSC and Annex B," said Pace's Chief Technology Officer Andy Trott. "In addition, we have already integrated a DigiCipher II license from General Instrument Corp. which enables us to work with any U.S.-based operator with GI head-end equipment." Pace has traditionally been first to market for set-top boxes in the cable, satellite, and terrestrial industries. For example, Pace delivered the world's first MPEG-2 digital boxes in volume in Australia in 1996. Pace also was first to market with MPEG-2 DVB cable boxes for Italian operator Stream in 1996. "Cisco is thrilled to be participating with Pace in Di4100 rollouts. We are providing digital head-end, optical transmission, multigigabit routing/switching and set-top provisioning middleware in support of Pace Di4100 deployments," said Paul Bosco, GM of Cisco cable products and solutions. "Pace is showing the world DVB and DOCSIS provide the ideal open standards based platform for next generation digital television and interactive entertainment. This is an exciting step for Pace and the cable industry worldwide." "We're proud to be a technology innovator and first to market in cable, satellite and terrestrial. Now we have topped these achievements by delivering the world's first DOCSIS-compliant box which is operating in customers' homes. Pace and Cisco have achieved this through close cooperation, and we're excited by the interest the box is receiving from other MSOs," said Malcolm Miller, chief executive officer of Pace Micro Technology. The full range of capabilities of Pace's advanced digital set-top boxes are being demonstrated during the NCTA at exhibit 3783, including: -- A demonstration of a digital cable set-top box integrated with a DOCSIS-compliant cable modem, a version of which is currently deployed with Cable & Wireless Communications customers; -- A set-top box (DOCSIS version) connected to a television, showing digital video/audio capabilities, and a PC connected to an Ethernet port demonstrating Web surfing, -- A set-top box (DAVIC version) connected to a television showing digital video/audio capabilities; -- A demonstration of Pace's wireless MMDS box, currently under development for BellSouth Entertainment's video service offerings; -- Interactive television services such as IP telephony and IP video conferencing.
