Pace Developing Digital Set-Top Boxes for BellSouth's Wireless MMDS Home Entertainment Service

CHICAGO, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Pace Micro Technology plc is currently
developing more than 100,000 digital set-top boxes for BellSouth Corp.'s MMDS
digital home entertainment service. The first boxes are expected to arrive in
November 1999.
BellSouth Entertainment first launched its unparalleled, 100-percent
digital television service in New Orleans in November 1997. Since that time,
the company has launched service in Atlanta, Orlando and Jacksonville, and
will begin offering service in Daytona Beach and Miami later this year.
Currently, more than 2 million homes and businesses in BellSouth's region have
access to the best of local, cable and satellite programming with unmatched
picture and sound quality.
"BellSouth has a long-standing commitment to meet the diverse needs of our
customers with high quality products, advanced technology and superior
service," said Bob Frame, president, BellSouth Entertainment. "Pace's set-top
boxes help us fulfill that commitment of high quality products and advanced
technology."
Headquartered in West Yorkshire, England, Pace's agreement with BellSouth
marked Pace's first break into the North American market and into the
development of digital set-top boxes for wireless video service. Pace's
comprehensive digital offering also covers satellite, terrestrial and cable
services.
"The deal we've signed with BellSouth is an exciting development for Pace
as we establish ourselves in the North American marketplace," said Malcolm
Miller, chief executive for Pace Micro Technology. "We believe our
flexibility, technical excellence, speed to market and open approach to
proprietary technology and standards in set-top box manufacturing will offer
U.S. companies more choice than ever before."
BellSouth is a $23 billion communications services company. It provides
telecommunications, wireless communications, cable and digital TV, directory
advertising and publishing, and Internet and data services to nearly
34 million customers in 19 countries worldwide.
Pace Micro Technology plc is Europe's largest manufacturers of integrated
digital set-top boxes necessary. The company is actively involved in all
digital TV platforms -- satellite, terrestrial and cable, and has played a key
role in the creation of the digital pay television market worldwide. By
January 1999 Pace had manufactured over 2 million digital set-top boxes that
were delivered to 18 international broadcasters in the UK, Europe,
Latin America, Australasia and the Far East.
