The internet has already changed my life. I pay my bills on line. I buy my jeans at www.gap.com. I stopped subscribing to the newspaper and read it on line - don't even need a tv guide, got it online. Don't watch the news on TV...read it online. BTW, why will people go to school anymore? Online classes offered by universities offer greater variety. Do we need to expand our libraries when we can access books, periodicals, etc. online? If/when others join in, do we need 3 shopping malls in every community - or just 1? What will happen to commercial real estate?

Well, I've thought about that, too as I was "shopping" for my daughter's tennis shoes. Had to find the store, look for the style, and then just give them my credit card.

The bricks and mortar shopping centers are going to continue to be supported by kids who just need to get out of the house, irrespective of any reason. Part of growing up, as it were. Independence - I get to stroll down the mall, looking cool, hoping I can see someone who see's me.

And if that doesn't work, the feds will pass a law that it is illegal to use the internet without providing some kind of evidence that you strolled through a bricks and mortar address, and bought something that didn't allow the lessee's to fail. The real estate coalition is just too powerful in DC to fall into oblivion, although it could happen, you know?

Best regards,

Mark A. Peterson

The word "craze" or bubble refers not to the merit of the underlying
business, but to the public en masse bidding the prices of the stocks
involved beyond rationality. This is especially dangerous when
they do it on margin or otherwise borrow. Unlike previous
bubbles, credit cards are probably being used for this purpose.

You can see the phenomenon in the parabolic rise and the subsequent
decline from the peak so far.

The businesses involved in the previous bubbles went on to succeed; it
just took quite a few years until their actual earnings performance
caught up to the prices of their stocks. If the company was strong
enough to survive.

This is not the first time this has happened, and it surely will not
be the last.

What an excellent post! My words, but put better than I could ever hope for. I see exactly the same change to my life, with the addition that I also do my work online.

The Internet HAS arrived and is going to stay and CMGI is one monster house to exploit this fact.

Having said that, I still believe that there are a lot of Internet stock out there that will have to adjust: AOL, as one poster pointed out, would have to sign up the world to stay at this price and with the way things are moving it's isn't likely to happen. Online shops like AMZN and EBAY with a concept that would take overnight to copy will have to give in and so would probably the portals (does anyone here still need/use portals? I know I don't other than the search engines from time to time)
