I believe that they would have to serve her via the Hague Convention on Service of Process Abroad. I assume that Italy is a signatory to that treaty; I have had to effect service under the Hague Convention in Germany, Japan, and have also served people in Korea and Iran, but never in Italy. If I were defending Ms. Shell, assuming that she was properly served in Italy, which is going to be time consuming, but is not impossible, I'd defend on forum non conveniens grounds. I have a whole list of things I'd do, it could keep things tied up for months if not years.

Based on the article Gene Parrott just posted, I wonder if SI will just cave in and give the Plaintiff the actual names of the defendants with pseudonyms. They can't be served until the Plaintiff has their real names and addresses.
