"look at Slate magazine. It had lots of readers when it was free, but nobody wanted to pay for it."

Of course nobody needs to read Slate, but almost everyone needs to pay bills.

>>>What worries me is that this business model has failed before -- just look at Slate magazine.

IMHO, Slate is not a good example. AOL is a much better example with their 100 hours Free. Although, think you have a very good point, CheckFree needs to watch out for freeloaders, or even current paying customers converting over for a free six months. There are way CheckFree could limit this turnover. In addition, it is not as easy to switch bill pay providers as it is for ISP's.

Benny(IMHO)

So that makes two topics for the New York meeting...
1. Business to Business
2. Free-Loaders

Brooks, ATMs were initially free. Now they me for up to $2 for each visit.

I'm probably above average, but I'll bet you I give them over $20/month for the service(not my bank, whoever owns the ATM-if I go to my bank, it's free, but PNC seems to own all the key locations).

Anyhow, I hope it doesn't take as long for ebill to catch on as it did ATMs(to the point that they started charging)
