Lola, it is a very commonplace misconception among folks here in the states that it is illegal to short sell bulletin board stocks.

One more question Janice, why do Americans think that short selling is illegal? Is there some kind of law about that down there that I don't know about?

Beats me. Actually I think most people know that it's part of the market, and has been for centuries. In the States, most brokerages won't allow their clients to short BB stocks, or to short stock with a price below a certain figure. It isn't a law, it's just for their own convenience. We've seen that now, however, DLJ and Schwab are making it possible to short at least the pricier BBs. Obviously they're responding to demand, having realized they can profit by allowing this.

All this nonsense about rampant "illegal shorting" is one of those urban myths that's come to be accepted as the Word of God in some areas of discussion forums like SI. Ignorant investors believe it because they want to believe it. They want to believe it because, when "their" stock tanks, they want a scapegoat.

By the way, is Satan a short seller? <ggg>

Careful with those remarks about Satan. Boris has already made himself look silly by quoting from some of my old posts at the "Calling All SI Satanists" board. Tried to get the ABFGE Raging Bull people excited about 'em. It didn't work.
