I used to over- tip quite a bit, but stopped when I was disturbed about an unexpected, if modest, financial loss, and never decided to start again. What I do is "round up" in favor of the server, which usually amounts to about 17 or 18 percent.(Sometimes I still overtip more grandly on tiny bills)...Anyway, you also bring up the work/play dichotomy. I have not been fishing for at least 30 years, if memory serves. I have never hunted, or even shot a gun outside of a carnival shooting gallery. I have never camped out, nor back- packed, although I have done tenderfoot hiking. Special things from my youth: visiting historical landmarks, such as Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, and the Lincoln Memorial; going to the Smithsonian, especially the Natural History Museum and the old Air and Space Museum, and when I was a bit older, the Museum of American History and the National Gallery; going to the Watergate area to listen to concerts by the Navy Band; going to various parks, including the National Zoo; when I was a teenager, hanging out in Georgetown and the Dupont Circle area, going to poetry readings and Woody Allen movies; trying exotic restaurants, to the extent I had the scratch...well, you get the picture. I am not an outdoorsy type....
