U.S. OKs Hyundai-LG Chip Merger

Hyundai Electronics announced Tuesday that the United
States Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has ruled the proposed merger between two Korean electronic firms, Hyundai Electronics and LG Semicon, does not contradict related U.S. fair-trade regulations. Hyundai, which is due to take over its LG counterpart in the deal, said the FTC estimated that the two Korean chipmakers, when merged, could become the largest in terms of production capacity throughout the world. The FTC did say,
however, that the new merged firm would not pose any threat to the existing global chip price structure for end-users. Hyundai said that the FTC decision has been endorsed by the U.S. Department of Justice, adding that the European Union will also review the merger for compliance with related EU fair-trade laws.
