Tsumura to Market Monsanto's Oral Contraceptive in Japan Tokyo, June 15 (Bloomberg) -- Tsumura & Co., the largest maker of traditional Japanese herbal medicines, said it reached an agreement with Monsanto Co. to sell the U.S. company's low- dose oral contraceptive in Japan. The low-dose birth control pill will receive final approval in Japan later this month, after nine years of deliberations. Nine foreign and Japanese drugmakers will start marketing their products by autumn, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said. Tsumura, which sells herbal medicines to treat gynecological diseases, will distribute and sell the Synphase oral contraceptive made by Monsanto. The two companies will cooperate in marketing. Synphase will be the first non-herbal gynecological medicine in Tsumura's line of products, the company said. Tsumura shares rose 4 yen, or 0.8 percent, to 490 yen in morning trading in Tokyo. The Japanese Ministry of Health approved 16 different low-dose birth control pills, which will be marketed by nine companies. Estimates are that about 7 percent of Japanese women aged between 20 and 39 eventually will use birth-control pills. That represents a market of about 45 billion yen ($370 million) annually.
