<At that point I am treated like any other lurker and get to see all the advertisement and banners. If I choose to post or check a profile from there I am asked for my ID and password. That is when I get to go behind the secret curtain. >

I had forgotten that that's how it works! So when I am seeing ads, it is because I've clicked on my SI bookmark and started reading, but have not yet posted or checked profiles, which are the only two reasons I usually bother to enter my ID and password.

Moral of the story for Jeff and GNET: If you want lazy members like me to keep reading your banners, don't make them blink! Otherwise, I'll get in the habit of always logging in as a member upfront, thus throwing the advertising baby out with the blinking bathwater <g>.
