a news release that gives us a glimpse on what N2P is doing to offer unified messaging: -------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday June 16, 7:00 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: Open Port Technology, Inc. Open Port and Sun Microsystems Collaborate to Deliver IP Messaging Solutions to Service Providers CHICAGO and PALO ALTO, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Open Port Technology, Inc. and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) announced today that they are teaming to deliver IP fax and unified messaging solutions to service providers worldwide. The companies will combine marketing and business development efforts to offer service providers new revenue-generating IP messaging applications that can be quickly and seamlessly deployed over their existing network infrastructures.
The solution combines Open Port's recently announced IP LaunchPad(TM) Internet services creation platform, IP LaunchPad Fax Suite(TM) and IP LaunchPad Voice Suite(TM) with Sun-Netscape Alliance messaging server software and Java(TM) technology, and runs on Sun's scalable Enterprise(TM) servers and Netra(TM) carrier-grade servers, powered by the Solaris(TM) operating environment for SPARC(TM) platforms. The solution is designed to help service providers fill the pipe with new subscription- and transaction-based services while minimizing the impact on their existing network infrastructures. The solution is currently available from Open Port.
Open Port's IP LaunchPad platform and Fax Suite combined with Sun's Solaris operating environment and the SPARC platform have been in trial or are scheduled to be trialed over the next two months at more than 25 service providers.
One service provider that is currently trialing the joint solution is Interpath Communications, a network-based applications service provider based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. ''We are very pleased that Sun and Open Port are joining forces to address the needs of application service providers,'' said Michael Fox, general manager of Internet services for Interpath. ''Open Port's IP LaunchPad deployed on Sun systems offers both a scalable and secure approach to virtual IP-based messaging services. We expect that the solution will provide us a single platform upon which we can quickly launch multiple applications from multiple vendors. This solution promises to benefit Interpath, our customers and the service provider market as a whole.''
Other service providers trialing or scheduled to trial the solution include: Apex Global Internet Services (AGIS), America MetroComm Corp., Cable & Wireless Japan Ltd., China Telecom - Guangdong PTA, DigiNet, IBM Global Services, """""IDT's subsidiary Net2Phone""""", ISPhone, SmartNet/ITI Online, SyMet Systems Inc., TrueVision, UUNET - an MCI WorldCom Company, and Wisconsin CyberLynk Network.
''Open Port has proven to be an important strategic ally for Sun because they have been able to help our service provider customers offer revenue-generating IP messaging services quickly and seamlessly,'' said Chris Hurst, vice president of worldwide communications for Sun. ''Their strategy to integrate into a service provider's existing network infrastructure by running Sun's Solaris operating environment and interoperating with leading remote access servers has been extremely successful. Now, IP LaunchPad appears to take that one step further by providing a single, integrated platform on top of which service providers can easily launch and manage multiple applications from best-of-breed software vendors.''
''We are very pleased to be teaming with Sun,'' said Randy Storch, CEO for Open Port. ''As service providers deploy new services beyond email and web access, they need to implement the reliable, scalable infrastructure systems that Sun offers. Sun's technological innovation and leadership position in scalable network computing and Open Port's expertise and innovation in IP-based applications together leverage the core competencies of both companies and open up significant new market opportunities for their solutions. We think this will be a highly beneficial relationship.''
Industry analyst Peter Davidson of Davidson Consulting, Burbank, Calif., estimates that consumers and corporations can save from 30 to 70 percent in long distance charges by deploying fax over IP. Fax over IP is the first PSTN application that has migrated to the Internet, and Davidson predicts that the market for fax over IP will grow from $50 million in 1998 to $2 billion in 2002. Many other services, such as voice over IP and universal messaging, are expected to grow even faster.
Service Providers Gain Competitive Edge with Open Port and Sun Solutions
IP LaunchPad is Open Port's Internet services creation platform, which the company describes as ''an operating system for IP applications.'' The platform is designed for network service providers, ISPs, resellers and local exchange carriers to deploy new IP services by easily snapping in applications. With the new carrier-class messaging platform, Open Port is able to offer IP service solutions beyond fax -- helping service providers to easily broaden their revenue base by rolling out new services. The first application suites available for the platform are IP LaunchPad Fax Suite and IP LaunchPad Voice Suite (available in late summer).
In an era of convergence between telecommunications and Internet services, Sun provides solutions that can give telcos and Internet service providers a competitive edge. Sun's telco product line ranges from stable, scalable platforms for network services to infrastructure components. Sun's Netra products deliver complete, commercially available solutions from single-processor servers to fault-tolerant multiprocessing systems, allowing even the largest telecom and Internet service providers to deploy new revenue-generating solutions.
