I looked for a while on the internet, but "Fire in the Hole!" has passed into the vernacular, and all I found were sites for porn, chili, and music.

I will ask my brother-in-law, Chris' brother, the Cobol programmer, not the Buddhist one, he is a military history buff, he may know.

Before that, muzzle loaded cannon were fired with a quill (often rolled up from copper sheets although originally a goose-quill I would guess) loaded with gunpowder and thrust into the touch hole.

This state of affairs led to the quaint Prussian army proverb:

Alle Kunst
Ist Unsunzt
Wenn ein Engel in der Zundloch brunzt.

Roughly translated as:

All art is in vain, when an angel pees in your touch hole.
