Compaq to Cut Basic PC Price to $599,
Offer Its Own Internet-Access Service

Compaq Computer Corp. unveiled its consumer products for fall and the holidays, with plans to cut the price of its most basic computer by $100 to $599 and load each of its PCs with software for three Internet access services, including a new one of its own.

Company Profile: Compaq Computer

The entry-level price is the lowest starting point for a new product family at the nation's biggest seller of PCs. It recently added a model to its existing lineup at $599. The price remains well above the $299 and $399 of some start-up PC makers, however. Compaq executives said they plan to mainly market the machine in an $892 bundle with a printer and monitor.

"We believe that offer will be extremely compelling and position us to compete with some of the lower-cost offerings out there," said Mike Larson, Compaq's chief of consumer products.
