METROCALL AND GLENAYRE BEGIN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR NETWORK UPGRADE FOR
INTERNET APPLICATIONS AND ENHANCED SERVICES

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jun 30, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Metrocall,
Inc. (Nasdaq: MCLL) today announced the signing of a multi-million
dollar contract with Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS) to
upgrade Metrocall's Nationwide Wireless Network to support new Internet
applications, two-way messaging and enhanced services. The upgrade of
Metrocall's nationwide network of more than 150 Glenayre GL3000
Wireless Messaging Switches will allow Metrocall to offer subscribers
enhanced voicemail, wireless email and Internet-based information
services in addition to its current set of alphanumeric messaging,
guaranteed message delivery and voicemail services.

The upgrade of Metrocall's switch network to V6.1 software provides the
ability to offer a number of enhanced services designed to increase
revenue persubscriber.

"This upgrade opens our market area for advanced services to the entire
U.S.," said Thomas P. Matthews, Metrocall's senior vice president of
corporate and business development. "By upgrading our entire switch
network nationwide to the latest technology, we can now introduce a new
set of revenue producing features that provide a greater level of
communications capability for Metrocall's subscribers."
