Art, surprisingly, the total size and weight of a CF card with socket and a built-in microdrive are almost identical. And, the total power draw of 340MB in CF versus the Microdrive are in the same ballpark.

IMHO, the best advantage of CF is that the manufacturer can provide a small CF card with his product and thereby reduce the retail price. Not to mention that many users might be uncomfortable tossing around delicate mechanical devices like the Microdrive.
