Actually I agree with you in this. If one counts all the paper products that are exported from the US, I betcha $200 bil trade deficit will turn in to $500 bil trade surplus over night.

Hint. Paper products include the greenback.

No. Which Issue?

I suppose there are all sorts of counting problems in both directions. We have the problem of illegal drug imports. They must total many many billions of dollars and no one is counting them officially either. I think another approach that helps is to track the accumulation of U.S. assets by foreigners vs. our accumulation of foreign assets. There are much better tabs kept on treasuries etc... In that light it is clear that there's a lot of dollars flowing overseas since we have been accumulating a rapidly growing debtor position over the last few years. They verify each other.
