anecdotal evidence is notoriously unreliable. Look at stats. Unemployment levels in the US are very low, lower than in Japan and the US doesn't have the added drag of the window sitter phenomenon. The strength in employment has even begun to impact the most resistant parts of the unemployment demographic, young black males. Personal income growth, housing starts etc have remained strong. Yes there is a segment of the US that is living beyond its means but it is hardly a large segment.
