Motorola Gets a $400 Million Contract
To Supply Cellular Equipment to Telesp

Dow Jones Newswires

FOZ DO IGUACU, Brazil -- Motorola Inc. said Tuesday it received a
$400 million contract for digital cellular phone equipment from Brazilian
cellular operator Telesp Celular Participacoes SA.

Motorola, based in the Schaumburg, Ill., said
that the deal, which includes code division
multiple access, or CDMA, technology, as
well as 1 million cellular phones, will bolster its presence in the highly
competitive Brazilian market.

Motorola had 1998 sales of $29.4 billion.

Telesp Celular, controlled by Portugal Telecom SA, provides services in
Sao Paulo, Brazil's richest and most populous state.

Construction of radio bases and installation of switches are to begin
immediately, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2000.
